Another terrible headline. Tell me, what does the bill have to do with *illegal* immigration if it applies to green card holders all the same? It doesn’t. Using terms like “illegal immigration” & “border enforcement” is just a tactic to drum up fear.

I said the reporting on this has been bad, so here is an example. This headline is nonsense; the bill has absolutely nothing to do with border enforcement. (It’s also 8 pages long, go read it for yourself).

It also transfers a crazy amount of power to states to shape federal immigration policy. District court judges could, in theory, ban visas to people from entire countries. Texas could reinvent the Chinese Exclusion Act.

The Laken Riley Act essentially mandates detention for immigrants who have committed, admitted to, or even just been *accused* (read: not even convicted!) of theft. Even if they are here legally, e.g. have a green card
