We hope to secure commitment to no compulsory redundancies in areas currently targetted for Voluntary Severance under threat of future cuts: Medicine & Population Health; English; History, Philosophy & Digital Humanities; Sociological Studies, Politics and IR; Research, Partnerships & Innovation

We are hoping that our mandate for action will give management pause in launching restructures & further cuts to academic staff in the Management School and Civil & Structural Engineering in the coming months, as well as Chemistry, Materials Science, and the rest of EAS which enter review imminently

6 staff remain at risk of redundancy following the conclusion of the Professional Services Framework restructure.

We do not have exact figures on the number of Fixed Term Contract teaching staff whose contract's have not been renewed over the past months, likely around 30.

Hi Caroline,
11 staff in East Asian Studies are at risk of redundancy with the proposal to move language teaching to MLTC, reducing staff numbers, and pushing G7 teaching staff onto 11 month contracts.

19 staff remain at risk of redundancy following the conclusion of the IT Services restructure.

We hope that this strong mandate encourages Management to make an offer that will avert the need to take strike action.

Meanwhile, members will meet on Thursday to discuss how to use this mandate most effectively to protect jobs & fight back against worsening of our workloads & working conditions.

BREAKING: Our members at the University of Sheffield have voted overwhelmingly for strike action against the University Executive Board’s ongoing campaign of job cuts, and the threat to staff workload and wellbeing that they represent.

University of Sheffield @ucu.org.uk members, have you voted? If you haven't, please do so immediately as the deadline is soon. Trade union solidarity is one the most important tools we've got left in our much troubled world. Don't waste it. @sheffielducu.bsky.social @ucuhallam.bsky.social

Here goes my vote for strike action at the University of Sheffield. When your management treats staff & students as disposable commodities, it's your duty, even more than your right, to respond. @sheffielducu.bsky.social @zooarchlabsheff.bsky.social @ucu.org.uk #sheffield #university #workersrights

Great day to post a ballot (when isn't it?!) The announcement of more potential restructures during the ballot period shows just how shameless Uni of Sheffield management is! It's so important everyone votes in our local dispute to save jobs @sheffielducu.bsky.social

We were already being balloted for strike action, and now this. It follows an absolutely brutal year of restructuring ⬇️

An unwelcome boost to our ongoing @sheffielducu.bsky.social industrial action ballot as our VC announces more work areas to be targeted by cuts.

It is unclear that this has much to do with finances, but is more an ideological push to change the University's "size and shape".

Don’t like to have to keep doing this, but management has left us again with no choice. We will vote again to take action and massive numbers will again be out on picket lines. And like last year, management will again back down. All of that can be prevented if management chooses to negotiate.

The strong action that our members took in Spring resulted in key concessions from management, and the safeguarding of jobs at risk until the end of 2025.

We are now calling for a new mandate to further protect jobs, and address increasing workload pressures these cuts are exacerbating.

Further, we believe that University Management have not demonstrated the financial or organisational need for aggressive changes to staffing. Public accounts demonstrate that the University has very little debt, strong reserves, liquidity and an operational surplus.

Using the latest student recruitment data from the Office for Students, our recent article shows that the University of Sheffield has been hit way harder than average in international student recruitment.

Why the University of Sheffield’s problems are made in Sheffield
University management claims the current financial situation is entirely down to external factors. The evidence suggests otherwise.

There is a clear crisis in HE which requires urgent Government intervention, but we don’t believe that the University is in the level of financial difficulty which requires such drastic action, and the University Executive Board have failed to take accountability for their own role here.

This comes on top of the university-wide restructuring of professional services staff, IT Services, upcoming restructure of East Asian Studies language provision, and restructures of Nuclear AMRC and the English Language Teaching Centre in the past year.
