“The statistics released today once again highlight the scale of the housing emergency in Wales, with more than 13,000 households assessed as homeless last year and more than 6,000 households trapped in temporary accommodation. “Behind those statistics are the lives of ordinary people, and everyday Shelter Cymru hears from individuals and families experiencing the heartbreaking reality of the housing emergency. An emergency that can mean long periods spent living in Bed & Breakfasts, decades long waits for a social home, and living with the near constant risk of eviction or debilitating rent rises for people stuck renting privately. “With the same story being told by the statistics every year it’s clear that radical change is needed to turn the tide. And with potentially transformative homelessness legislation before the Senedd and an election on the horizon we believe that now is the moment for all political parties in Wales to commit to ending the housing emergency once and for all. To commit to working together to build a nation where everyone has access to the home they need.”
