i like seeing these kinds of satellite imagery errors on google maps. imagine if they really did have a random kink in the road like this

i got my hands on a rare fruit! garcinia madruno, sometimes known a charichuela or lemon drop mangosteen but the latter name also refers to garcinia intermedia. it tastes like a pleasantly lemony tropical sour candy, and sometimes i get hints of mangosteen which is itself a quite complex flavour

compared to the other red kiwi, this one is more of just a red ring around the centre. it's also a more vibrant yellow than the golden kiwi
November 2, 2025 at 1:27 AM
i had to freeze some of these for 5-6 months to get all these together

the top two are two "red" kiwi varieties, and the bottom two are golden and green kiwis.

the freezer is fine but now i have 20 jars of assorted fruit jellies and juices

got some rose hips and made a drink with it!

these ones are quite sour and have a herbal/medicinal taste to them. not really my thing. the seeds also have tiny hairs that will irritate your insides. i believe these are from the dog rose?

i've had better rose hips from the chestnut rose honestly

oh yeah so i don't usually post cooked food on here but i might as well show that i actually do cook and eat the stuff i do, like this is a stir fry with pork ribs and fried tofu. should have added more veggies but all i had at the moment was some daikon i was fermenting and gai-lan sooo i said no
October 21, 2025 at 12:45 AM
i fermented some winter bamboo shoots for a month! i'm like, 80% sure most of the cyanide should be gone now so i'll blanch them before stir frying

these also don't smell that bad, i've bought some that are absolutely pungent and that stink up my place for a few days but these are quite mild

i didn't put this calamondin tree outside this year cuz i took a bunch of trips and acclimatizing it each time i bring it back inside would have been a pain but it does have some fruit that's almost turned orange. it's about an inch in diameter and i really only use these guys for drinks
October 19, 2025 at 10:41 PM
but the range in colours is cool, sad that most of these will fade though. also the one on the right, it actually usually looks chocolate brown and is darker than the one right next to it but the light in this pic hit it in a way that made it look lighter

replace "helicopter" with "domain"

(left to right, top to bottom:) northern highbush blueberry, common bilberry, wild lowbush blueberry, mountain huckleberry, american cranberry, small cranberry, lingonberry. all of these are in the genus vaccinium

out of these, my favourites are probably the mountain huckleberry and the lingonberry
October 10, 2025 at 3:02 AM
some people call these a lookalike too but i think these look extremely different. virginia creeper, not edible and will irritate your mouth. this (parthenocissus quinquefolia) is related to boston ivy/japanese ivy (parthenocissus tricuspidata) which is the plant whose leaf snivy is based on

found some wild grapes!

these are not something i think most people should try because it's easy to confuse them with the poisonous moonseed. personally i think these guys also taste like poison. not that i tried these.

the blue jays love em, though. there were like, 20 of them just hopping around
October 8, 2025 at 1:45 PM
couldn't find fresh ones so, from top, clockwise: large cranberry (v. macrocarpon), small cranberry (v. oxycoccos), lingonberry (v. vitis-idaea). it seems like the smaller they are, the more flavourful and complex and sweeter they are. i get why that old lady was excited about the lingonberries
October 5, 2025 at 4:39 AM
it's muscadine grape season. these guys have super thick skins and to me, they have an almost gasoline-like odour with an underlying foxy musky candy grape smell. i personally peel mine but ik some people eat the skins too, they're quite crunchy and sour and astringent, almost like a plum skin
September 19, 2025 at 7:13 AM
this is a fruit i'm not gonna buy again, it's quite difficult find in north america but... i just can't really enjoy the flavour of this one. it's really complex but the funky notes i just can't really enjoy unfortunately (pic from the last time i bought one)

a lone sour gummy worm on the streetcar floor

neon blue and pink against the grey, grey world

where did it come from? where will it go?
September 17, 2025 at 10:54 PM
these are a super prized mushroom so i was happy to get them, even if they weren't whole. these were $35 USD/lb which is a decently cheap price for these actually. also the cashier took a pic of these afterward so she could ask her husband if he wanted some too. she's a real one, knows the good shit
September 16, 2025 at 12:45 AM
i got these ajimaru mikan oranges which were... 25 dollars for a box of 5... but they just don't sell satsuma mandarins in the east, so even though these were pricy, i had to get them to satisfy my itch

the highways here are pretty poorly designed, it's like the engineers were like, "haha! merge, motherfucker, merge!" and you have to just find a gap immediately after going around a curve or after accelerating from a standstill to 80. kinda sad they made the last interchange safer, tbh
September 15, 2025 at 4:11 AM
the traffic here fucking sucks
September 15, 2025 at 2:30 AM
That's Mt. Baker, one of the mountains in the Cascade Range. Wow, says here it's over 10000 feet tall! On a clear day, you can totally see it to the south of Vancouver. You can get really cool pictures of it behind the city if you use a camera with a telephoto lens. Let's just hope it stays quiet...

articulated trolleybus in the main downtown bus exchange in vancouver. i don't think any of the articulated hybrid electric buses come here though so i can't get those in the shot
September 12, 2025 at 2:33 AM
these two views in vancouver and seattle are both ones i never did since i didn't want to look like a tourist. but honestly, being gone for so long helps put things into perspective. sure the winters are depression incarnate, but in the summers, it can be the most beautiful place on earth
