🥔 Offer autumn harvest crops such as taro and chestnuts
🍶 Pour a small cup of sake or tea as an offering
📝 Read or write poetry, like they did in the Heian period

Even if clouds or rain obscure the moon, you can still appreciate the night.

This full moon night is known as Jūgoya (十五夜). It is celebrated on the 15th night of the eighth month of the traditional Japanese lunar calendar, which usually falls in September or October. In 2025, Tsukimi is today on October 6th.

🌕✨ Celebrate Tsukimi – Japan’s Moon-Viewing! ✨🌕

月見 Tsukimi, meaning “moon-viewing,” is a centuries-old Japanese custom honoring the beauty of the mid autumn moon (中秋の名月Chūshū no meigetsu). We enjoy the beautiful moon, show our respect and gratitude, and make offerings to the moon.

🍂✨ Wishing you a wonderful Autumn Equinox! ✨🍂

In Japan, the Spring and Autumn Equinoxes are national holidays. Even in the 21st century, despite being a highly technologically advanced country, Japan continues to honor this tradition, showing gratitude, respecting nature, and living in harmony with it.

The Mitama-matsuri is held in front of the family Soreisha 祖霊舎/御霊舎, or Ancestral Shrine, which is distinct from the Kamidana.
Afterwards, families visit the graves, clean them, leave offerings, and pray.
It’s a way to show respect and gratitude, because without our ancestors, we wouldn’t be here. 🙏
shintoinari.bsky.social
Spring and Autumn Equinox are times to show respect and gratitude not only to the spirits of nature but also to our ancestors who came before us.

So during this time, the Mitama Matsuri is held to honoring our ancestors’ spirits.
shintoinari.bsky.social
Our world, the realm of the living, is called 現世 Utsushiyo, while the world of the dead is called 幽世 Kakuriyo or 冥界 Meikai in Shinto terms. During the Spring and Autumn Equinoxes, when day and night are equal, many Japanese people believe these two worlds are closest to one another.

🌙 Happy Autumn Equinox Day! 秋分の日 / 彼岸の中日 🌙

Today is Shūbun no Hi 秋分の日, the Autumn Equinox, when day and night are perfectly balanced.

In Shinto beliefs, when someone passes away, their spirit (Mitama 御霊) becomes a guardian of their family.
