This full moon night is known as Jūgoya (十五夜). It is celebrated on the 15th night of the eighth month of the traditional Japanese lunar calendar, which usually falls in September or October. In 2025, Tsukimi is today on October 6th.

In Japan, the Spring and Autumn Equinoxes are national holidays. Even in the 21st century, despite being a highly technologically advanced country, Japan continues to honor this tradition, showing gratitude, respecting nature, and living in harmony with it.

The Mitama-matsuri is held in front of the family Soreisha 祖霊舎/御霊舎, or Ancestral Shrine, which is distinct from the Kamidana.
Afterwards, families visit the graves, clean them, leave offerings, and pray.
It’s a way to show respect and gratitude, because without our ancestors, we wouldn’t be here. 🙏

Spring and Autumn Equinox are times to show respect and gratitude not only to the spirits of nature but also to our ancestors who came before us.

So during this time, the Mitama Matsuri is held to honoring our ancestors’ spirits.

Our world, the realm of the living, is called 現世 Utsushiyo, while the world of the dead is called 幽世 Kakuriyo or 冥界 Meikai in Shinto terms. During the Spring and Autumn Equinoxes, when day and night are equal, many Japanese people believe these two worlds are closest to one another.

Today is Shūbun no Hi 秋分の日, the Autumn Equinox, when day and night are perfectly balanced.
