All in all a good wee trip to Belfast and already looking forward to London #BOPA2026

4. AI is here and in use. Personally I remain very skeptical about the clinical decision making and feel we are some distance off AI molecular tumour boards - at least in terms of it advising drugs might work - because will anyone pay for the drugs like that... We used evidence not hunches..

3. Palliative care seems as inequitable as Oncology provision and if there is a door open for use to push then we can perhaps push for our palliative care pharmacy colleagues too

2. Workshop - Journal Club: a Journal Club is just a chat about a paper perhaps with a bit of structure. You don't need to be an expert in research to read a paper and work out if you think it is good. Everyone will have a different take on the same paper and that's the point of the discussion

#BOPA2025 Day 3 summary

1. Elaine Vickers despite being blown off, thinks our next big things will be RAS inhibitors, protein degraders and vaccines. Two of them at least might be useful in pancreatic cancer which could really do with a boost

Not sure which workshop to attend at #BOPA2025 this morning?

Ever been to a Journal Club and not known what to do? Never been to a Journal Club at all...? Come for a chat through 4 papers with friends. Hopefully build confidence/ skills reading 🗞️

⏰10:30📍Meeting Room 1

Every year the Symposia Organising Committee for #BOPA2025 books Elaine Vickers for the Sunday morning session. And every year she never fails to deliver anything but the best...

If you are still in 🛏️... It's time to get up!

Elaine's going to tell us what's coming next

And then to finish up with Shane Martin's Psychology of Renewal which I know touched a nerve with me, and probably others in the audience too.

I might need to get some time with nature.

I may never look at Michael Angelo's David the same way again! But so rewarding to hear that the North East's pragmatic just put all Zoladex guys on bone protection unless there is a reason not to is being used elsewhere too.

2 fabulous speakers in the solid tumour session. I think they were out to see if they could out do each other on the presentations. 1 presenter thought he would give Elaine Vickers a run for her money, the other took a much more light hearted and real world approach to the prostate clinic

10 years ago 'wearables' were going to be the answer. I thought that had fizzled out, but it seems to be back. Not sure what changed! Maybe all the wearable rings I keep getting ads for have a use? But I'm already assuming interoperability will be a problem

Could LLMs write a chemo protocol for us? Why does it take 6 hours to write anyway? But will checking the AI output take 5hrs 58mins?

There is a juxdiposition (I think that's the right word) between sessions saying we need to deprescribe more and sessions saying we need to optimise 🦴♥️ etc

3. Poster discussion. Always interesting to see what people have to say about their research.

Will AI enable low risk prescriptions to not need screened? Are we already doing that with normal intelligence for things like Denosumab?

My highlights from Day 2 of #BOPA2025 👇🏼

1. As critical as I may be of government I'm hopeful that the door is open for someone who understands what we do to help us get out voice heard.

2. Compassion needs us to be in a good place to deliver good stuff for our patients.

I'm sure you'll all be relieved to know I'm not breaking out the kilt tonight at #BOPA2025 Awards dinner.

(Obviously that's because I couldn't fit it in my hand 🧳 with the 🗡️ and nothing to do with it not fitting)

It's been a little while since @bopa.org.uk had a "motivational speaker" as their last presenter on Saturday. So I'm pretty excited Shane Martin is coming to present about "The psychology of renewal: seeking purpose & meaning in life & work" - make sure you are in the #BOPA2025 auditorium at 16:35
