SS NORTHERN STAR was a liner of the Shaw Savill Line. From the early 1970s she spent most of her time cruising, but was continually beset with mechanical problems due to inadequate maintenance. With increase in oil prices in 1973 she was uneconomic. In 1975 after 13 years service she was scrapped

Newcastle Quayside market 1960s.
The Quayside Market has a long history dating back to 1736 when it was first recorded in historic records as a fair. The original Quayside market stretched from the old Tyne Bridge (near the site of the current Swing Bridge) along Sandgate and beyond.

6 May 1945 USS South Dakota was loading ammunition from USS Wrangell when a tank of propellant for guns exploded. The blast detonated 4 tanks & caused a fire, the crew flooded the magazine for turret 2 to avoid a catastrophic explosion, 3 were killed, 8 more were seriously wounded and later died.

CHERRY VENTURE - IMO 5332214 - Owned by Sea Tanker; Built in 1945. On 08 July 1973 sailing from Napier to Singapore in ballast, she ran aground on Teewah Beach, Queensland. Removal of the wreck reasons began in 2007 The ship's propeller is mounted as a monument in the township of Rainbow Beach.

MEGARA (VLCC) built in 1968 by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Nagasaki, Japan for Shell Tankers. Deadweight 210,067 tons, a length overall of 325 meters, and a beam of 47.2 meters.​​ Renamed DYVI NOVA in 1976 owners Nova Tanker.
Broken up in Masan, South Korea, in 1978 after only 10 years service.

MAURETANIA was built by Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson Ltd on the Tyne in 1907.

She was bound to Bayonne in ballast (probably to load steel, fertilizers or grain) and she had an electrical blackout. She tried to go inside Bayonne docks when the ship drifted towards breakwater and eventually broke in half on the rocks.
11 crew members & port pilot were all rescued by helicopter.
