Localized or mesh-based volumetrics are/were harder but totally doable. Depending on the type of effect, smoky particle systems can look good enough instead.

Simple linear height fog (exactly your single-axis fog) has been a thing since about the quake 3 engine (and was used to good effect in Q3A)! & Exponential height fog for atmospheres has been a thing in UE since like UE2 I think.

To get SR50, a speed of ~71, you have to press forward, plus strafe left, plus "strafe on" and "turn left" which amounts to an additional "strafe left" command which is capped at 50 but not 40. So you get sqrt(50*50 + 50*50)

It's not exactly 1.41 unless you SR50 - so normally you get a forward speed of 50 (arbitrary units per unit) and a sideways speed of 40. so simple straferunning gives you SR40, or a speed of ~64.
