Are there hidden dates to be found within the great mans (Shakespeare) work? Let's take a closer look at Macbeth. Scholars cant agree on which year Macbeth was written. Was it 1606 or 1607? And yet for those who know where to look, the answer is hiding in plain sight. THE TRAGEDIE OF MACBETH. The top section of the title page of the first edition of Shakespeare's Macbeth. In the top section of the title page of the play, page 131 (as printed in the First Folio), embedded within the title, are four Roman numerals, D, I, M, C. It's easier to spot them if they are enlarged, like this: THE TRAGEDIE OF MACBETH Rearanged into descending order they form the number MDCI (1601). Add to this the three other numerals 1-3-1 that form the page number and you get 1606. But why would the printers go to all that trouble just to hide the date of the play? You are right to be sceptical.
