On this day in 1953, Mickey Mantle smashed a Russ Meyer pitch into the upper deck of Ebbets Field, becoming the fourth player in World Series history to hit a grand slam. Here’s my painting of the moment, based on the photography of Mark Kauffman. What a JOY this was to create.

Bob Boyd was born 106 years ago today. We really should talk more about Bob Boyd. He’s one of those guys who got caught in the middle of integration, but just raked everywhere he went (and we have 7500+ at bats to prove it).

Bob Boyd was born 105 years ago today. A quick glance at his Baseball Reference page shows an interesting career. First, there’s 2 All-Star seasons in the Negro Lgs. But then he doesn’t play 100 games until age 37 in 1957. Overall, we see 11 seasons & a little over 2,000 AB. There’s more…
