shourodasgupta.bsky.social
Delighted to welcome @profejzrobinson.bsky.social (@granthamlse.bsky.social @gsos-lse.bsky.social) to #CMCC for the start of her sabbatical in #Venezia!

We will be working on #foodsecurity #labour #whatworks @ipcc.bsky.social

"Early warning systems do seem to work. Workers who reported recalling getting a heat alert had a lower probability of reducing their working hours and a lower probability of experiencing heat related health effects."

@shourodasgupta.bsky.social & I wrote an @lseblogs.bsky.social on heat & the UK workforce.

We are not used to heatwaves in the UK, insufficient adaptation, insufficient cooling, and worker health is being harmed.

Delighted to have been selected as a Lead Author for Chapter 5 "Enablers and barriers" in for the @ipcc.bsky.social AR7 WGIII.

Looking forward to working with @profejzrobinson.bsky.social @drrachellowe.bsky.social @etheokritoff.bsky.social and many other colleagues from all over the world.

Great to present joint work with @profejzrobinson.bsky.social at the @physoc.bsky.social #GCHS2025.

Adaptation including #EWS are partially effective in protecting workers from heat but still insufficient.

Clear scope for government interventions: max temperature regulation & better targeted EWS

Delighted to have the opportunity to engage with @physoc.bsky.social at #GCHS2025
In the picture, my co-author @shourodasgupta.bsky.social, presenting our work on heat and the labourforce

Plenty of scope for better adaptation and worker protection

“If we don’t take heat seriously, how does the economy keep functioning?”

@profejzrobinson.bsky.social, GSoS Acting Dean and advocate for worker protection during extreme heat, asked at the Physiological Society 2025 Global Climate and Health Summit.

First time in Madrid!

A climate change induced tragedy. A 47-year-old construction worker died in Emilia-Romagna due to high heat. Construction workers are amongst the most vulnerable to heat stress.

We need proactive labour protection policies. Protecting workers from heat is protecting human rights.

& Y. Zhou. We collected data after high heat period, UK, 2024. Negative impacts on worker health. Some autonomous adaptation, but worker empowerment matters. Early warning systems work.

Stronger labour protections policies are required.

Worker empowerment is key along with...

Maximum working temperature thresholds, better early warning systems & employer investment in resilience.

Protecting workers from heat is protecting human rights.

Improving the resilience of the UK labour force in a 1.5°C world - Grantham Research Institute on climate change and the environment
This study quantifies the impacts of heat stress on the UK labour force, focusing on labour supply, labour productivity, the health of workers, and how adaptation is reducing the negative impacts.

shourodasgupta.bsky.social
Impacts are unequal.

Older/younger workers, those with health conditions, in high-exposure sectors (construction, agriculture), or doing physical jobs are more vulnerable.

Hourly/commission workers often face a choice: risk health or lose pay.

Workers without regular contracts are not empowered
shourodasgupta.bsky.social
Early warnings reduced negative impacts of heat stress partially.

Advanced alerts reduced the probability of workers reporting adverse health effects du e to high heat by ~5 percentage-points

Employer actions - cooling & hydration access improved productivity and lessened health effects.

Our new @granthamlse.bsky.social WP w/ @profejzrobinson.bsky.social @drchowarth.bsky.social al & Y. Zhou quantifies heat stress impacts on UK workers

1°C temperature anomaly increased probability of a worker reporting negative health effects by 9.1%, reducing hours by 9.9% & effort by 9.5%.
