I get what you mean more and there's something interesting here but I'm looking at this screenshot and I can't imagine something that "plain" holding up when applied to a 70 bucks 3rd person open world game, let alone one where production is so scuffed they can hardly afford to develop the

That and like everyone who had actual expertise in optimization left the industry or got laid off around that time and got replaced by "easily optimize your game in 10mn!" dudes on YT who never shipped a game
October 16, 2025 at 5:36 PM
That's not the tech's fault! I got a student project with nanites lumen and VSM running at 60fps on a 3060 TI, back when lumen wasn't as optimized as it is now, and I arguably didn't even do as much as what I actually could based on what I've learned since then

to them

Lumen has like over 500 parameters you can tweak and peoples still ship games with all of them set to default, and with only software lumen even tho hardware lumen looks and run better, all because ppl just won't care about the tech at all unless you personally hand all the info they need to know

Baked lighting, but not all of em, and more often than not real perf issues come from ppl having zero tech plan for their games, absolutely winging it then brute forcing it into looking normal. RTGI and baked lighting both have their sets of constraints but ppl just don't wanna learn about em

Counterpoint : doom TDA being able to hit 60fps on a 2060 super and SW outlaws being on switch 2 with decent image quality shows that RT never needed to be all that resource intensive (and that the real performance issues are somewhere else)
Like sure a bunch of games coming out could've gone with
October 16, 2025 at 5:29 PM
Also even if you're the kind of ppl who does care a lot about graphics tech you can still provide valuable opinions on a game that's not going for "high end graphics"
Like it's still maths and code that puts pixels on screen no matter the game
October 16, 2025 at 5:23 PM
Very technically complex. Making everything more "flat colored" would arguably exacerbate another major issue with the game, which is that everything that isn't a pokémon looks the same and blends together so much your brain stops paying attention to it
October 16, 2025 at 5:20 PM
Really wondering what you have in mind if what I see in this game qualifies remotely as realism
idk why ppl think having a stylized art direction of any kind means you can handwave away all issues resulting from technical constraints. Lots of the best stylized games are in fact
