A3 Listing all the names is a way of bringing much of the family into the narrative - it's not just Joseph, the prominent brothers, and Jacob. #ParshaChat

A1 Joseph's response when he finally introduces himself to his brothers seems well-considered and strategic. Telling them it was all part of God's plan to get the family from Egypt where they can be saved from famine would reduce the tensions. #ParshaChat

A0 Hi all and Shabbat shalom! It's been a rainy week here in California with a lot of storm damage, though not where we are. #ParshaChat

A2 I think they have long-standing guilt over what they did to their brother, and they have a worldview saying that the cosmos can align to punish them for their deeds. #ParshaChat

A1 It feels like Joseph wants revenge on his brothers, so he is going to toy with them for now, but ultimately he wants them to be taken care of and survive the famine. #ParshaChat

A0 Hi all and Shabbat shalom! I made my annual batch of latkes on Thursday which were yummy. #ParshaChat

A2 There's not a lot of concern being shown to others in this chapter; the characters are for the most part looking to their own advantages. The midwife is caring for Tamar at the very end though. #ParshaChat

A0 Shabbat shalom, all! We've had three weeks of unrelenting fog and chilly dampness here in the Central Valley. Brrr. Looking forward to #ParshaChat.

A3 Laban may be saying this now because after a month of residence Jacob is no longer just a family guest and they are both trying to figure out how Jacob now fits into the economy of the family. #ParshaChat

A2 It seems like Jacob is hedging his bets. If he doesn't manage to return to the land of his ancestors, maybe the God of Isaac and the God of Abraham is not the god for him. #ParshaChat

A1 As a whole-parsha look, it feels appropriate that it begins with Jacob's dream of the stairway to heaven. The rest of the parsha covers a long period of time, but we're led to think it's like a few days, which is very dream-like compression. #ParshaChat

A0 Hi all and Shabbat shalom! We have't seen the sun here for about ten days which is getting rather tiresome. Looking forward to #ParshaChat.

A2 Isaac is showing concern for Rebekah when he is pleading on her behalf to God; Jacob is being quite self-centered in claiming the birthright from Esau over a bowl of stew. #ParshaChat

A1 I like the characterization of Abraham of being contented in his old age and when he dies. Jacob isn't showing a side to empathize with in this passage but I relate to him maybe because he's being the studious homebody who likes to make lentil soup. #ParshaChat

A0 Hi all and Shabbat shalom! We've been watching the Ken Burns series on the American Revolution which is excellent. Looking forward to #ParshaChat.

A3 God is doing due diligence to see if the actions of the people of Sodom really warrant annihilation of the city. #ParshaChat

A2 Perhaps God is thinking that Abraham would have doubts about the project of becoming a great and populous nation if Abraham was aware that God was prone to smiting nations down. #ParshaChat

A1 Abraham getting up and offering bread and a meal to the three visitors is definitely showing care about them, as is Abraham thinking about innocent lives that are at risk in Sodom. #ParshaChat

A0 The #ParshaChat tag is showing up, which is good to see. Looking forward to the discussion of Vayera.

A3 God seems to have learned that there always will be some corruption, and it's best to develop systems that will ameliorate it rather than wipe everything out. #ParshaChat

A2 God might have gone the route of destruction of everything followed by a complete restart, but God left a thread of continuity. Why was that? #ParshaChat

A1 I'm wondering how the earth itself becomes corrupt, beyond the corruption of humanity. #ParshaChat
