Radically pedestrian urban planning.
Chicago-centric. ✶✶✶✶
A few years later it began to become a park, though it was pretty rough in places for the next decade.

The buildings in the second photo all appear to still exist.

Like, really bad drainage.

Since I'm going into the Parks archives now, I can confirm that the park has always drained poorly.

Howard is a similar capacity to 98th, though it gets used for more lines.

Also, capacity restrictions at 98th were a cited reason for the RLE.

Midway is busier than 95th/Dan Ryan, and Pulaski is busier than 79th.

The Dan Ryan branch hasn't recovered post-pandemic to nearly the same degree as the Orange, and the Orange line could surpass the Dan Ryan before the RLE opens.

Aerials show it goes back to at least 1962, but it could be original to the street's first sewer. Earlier images are too grainy, and Sanborn maps aren't showing the width difference here.

I love that @spectrumnewsny1.bsky.social opened their segment on the future of NYC streets under Commish Mike Flynn with two bike riders headed towards a car parked in a bike lane.

It a nice "before picture" for the improvements to come.

Specifically, I mean that the crosswalk is 20ft wider than the street 20ft to the west of the Square on Palmer.

That could easily be narrowed to a width consistent with the curb, benefiting pedestrians and adding permeable coverage to the area with no loss to drivers.

The plan emphasizes 'people-oriented streets', and fixing some one-ways into two-way streets.

Downtown Orlando is asking for a woonerf in their new plan.

"It needs to be an everyday street, brimming with life and filled with the sound of residents. Here, the office worker can grab lunch, while passersby can linger under the tree canopies or pause for a moment on the benches."
