We found a new asymmetry in the large-scale chromosome structure: sister chromatids are systematically shifted by hundreds of kb in the 5′→3′ direction of their inherited strands! The work was led by Flavia Corsi, in close collaboration with the Daniel Gerlich lab.

We’re excited to share our review: "Next-generation genetic screens in kinetoplastids", now published in NAR!
It covers a range of perturbation methods—from RNAi to prime editing—as well as emerging assay technologies like scRNA-seq and image-activated cell sorting.

To evade the host immune response, many pathogens use antigenic variation, a strategy that involves periodic, semi-predictable switching of antigen expression.
Using a highly sensitive scRNA-seq approach, we have now discovered genomic features that control antigen selection mechanisms in T. brucei

If you are interested in antigenic variation, you may have wondered how parasites ‘select’ which antigen to express next.

Our manuscript, just published in Nature, provides some answers!

How is transport directionality achieved through the #trypanosome nuclear pore complex? The current model is symmetrical, but this study reveals that the trypanosome #NuclearPore has an asymmetrical architecture, with conserved hubs that direct mRNA transport 🧪 @plosbiology.org plos.io/3Q36QV2
Expansion microscopy identifies novel asymmetric pore proteins. The images show proExM of cell lines co-expressing epitope-tagged versions of NUP76 (top; magenta), NUP149 (middle; magenta), or NUP140 (bottom; magenta) in combination with NUP110 (green). Images were deconvolved (20 iterations for NUP149 and NUP76; 60 iterations for NUP140) and single planes of the nuclei are shown.
