yeah that's my theory. even as watching I was thinking about ways her scenes could be more powerful and tie in with the overall themes of the episodes and she just sort of falls flat. it kinda feels like they werent sure what to do with her at certain points. lots of potential left on the table IMO

but like even the way she explains CBT (as someone who has very successfully used CBT) feels like half baked and like the person who wrote the line didnt QUITE understand it. just rankles me

yeah I wondered if it was just an artifact of the time it was written in. Therapy wasn't as developed or even commonplace as it is now I think. Maybe it was like that. Her dialogue is super cringey in the year 2025 though

oh yeah to be clear i dont think she's inherently "good." i really love the scenes where she is struggling with her own morality and then accepts a beautiful fur coat in the next scene. I just love the way she's torn in two-- similar to Skyler but Carm is all in whereas Skyler has been forced there.

my dad refuses to go to therapy but loves the Sopranos and im wondering now if these things are linked lol
sievish.bsky.social
but I do love her relationship with Tony, I totally get how he got his hooks in her, the morbid curiosity as well as terror, I dunno, i think that's REALLY well done, I just wish she wasn't such a bad render of therapy

I genuinely do not like how Melfi is written. Like at all. It feels like she's written by someone who;s literally never been to therapy before, which is weird cuz David Chase says he partially based her on his own experience in therapy. but she repeatedly sounds just very stupid to me

I like Carmela a lot. I can totally see her as the proto Skyler White in Breaking Bad

I can see that Succession got the "I dont like any of these people at all, sometimes I hate them, but I am weirdly and affectionately invested in their repeated failures" straight from The Sopranos. both very much in that genre

im watching The Sopranos for the first time and im in season 4. i dunno why but Christopher calling Adriana damaged goods hit me so hard :[
