"I see it." He didn't even have to ask the doctor what had killed them. The #vicious #contortions on their bloodless features said plenty.

"We're gonna have to cordon off the area before we get too many curious folks around."

He sighed and nodded. He hated his job.

All the windows were #boarded up to block the gas from coming through. Of course, it was a futile effort. The chemical weapon drove everyone mad.

#Saneness returned only when the winds dispersed the clouds. No one remembered what happened during that time. That was on purpose.

He shone the torch on the prone man on the ground. The poor victim lay there, #catatonic, his eyes wide and unseeing.

Then he heard the sound of bat wings and a high pitched scream. He grabbed her sleeve and yanked her down, just as the #chiropteran dove from high, missing them both.

Men of #arcane learning gathered in city. They all were keen to share their #observations of this latest phenomenon. The more superstitious ones of the common folk said it was an omen. They wanted to understand this shadow...rationally.

Some things, they found, could not be analyzed.

Of course, the astronomer rattled on, #talkative when the rest of the group had fallen silent. The #umbra spread, a shadow of impenetrable darkness. Everyone shushed him. It was almost a holy moment for the history books.

It lasted a few seconds. Then a few minutes. Then longer.

He was left #gasping for breath, for the smell of #decay was overpowering. How long had it been, since these people had been left to rot? Days, weeks?

The scale of destruction was more than anyone had expected. Of course, the ones who praised it were the ones not on the front lines.
