great appreciation I now have for the deity and for those who are passionate about keeping her story alive. This brief dive into the mythology was definitely an enlightening experience, and has reignited the fires of curiosity about the world as I move through it. (7/7)

legend, FULL STOP.

Based on what I’ve briefly learned, “daughter of Pele” is a compliment that was rooted in a superficial meaning, but I now accept and embody on a spiritual level. I accept the honorific not primarily because I can relate to and identify with a few of her traits, but for the (6/7)

it’s amazing to me that she is not feared, but rather widely respected and revered by native Hawaiians and keepers of her story. Truly, the juxtaposition of her fiery temper and nature, and her tender care for land and life is nothing short of respectable. She IS the woman, the myth, and the (5/7)

but her indomitable spirit escaped to the Big Island, and she made a volcanic crater her home. She’s gracious enough to occasionally to take the form of a young woman in a red muumuu (inspiration for the Painted Lady in ATLA?) to warn locals of impending eruptions.

protective of what’s hers: (some of) her siblings, her land, and her home. She is a creator and a destroyer: her fires and lava flow ravage the land, but they also provide the opportunity for new growth and land formations. One of her sisters even killed her and made a hill out of her bones, (3/7)

I was not prepared for the diversity of the legends surrounding her origins and her life. The complexities certainly add to the cultural reverence, almost to the point of humility on my part.
