Catholic guilt is such a funny thing to me, because growing up in a mostly Protestant milieu there was still a bit of a stereotype that Catholics had a transactional view of religion and lacked a sense of personal morality.

I would assume that falling mortality rates and rising life expectancy are a big reason for this change. When death was more omnipresent you couldn’t ignore it or gloss it over with “celebration of life” type stuff.
