I either felt in the pin backs to the piece or glue them on using craft glue. I use a bit of felt sheet to secure the pin back for added security if I'm just gluing. Felting the pin backs can be tricky, but maybe a better option if you don't want any water messing up any glue.

Since they're soft they can't bend or break, which is nice. If they get dirty you can just wash them with a little soap and water. They can get a bit fuzzy over time, but you should be able to wet felt it back together or just needle felt it.
