I think it is why a lot modern fantasy stories don't feel all that fantastic to me. Everything gets explained, so there isn't any room for the fantastic.

Also, it is interesting that many of these older stories don't bother with extensive world-building or explanation. They just present the fantastic as is, with no explanation or justification. Oppose to modern fiction, where it is common for things to be extensively explained.
