‘When I visited Auschwitz many years ago, someone in our group said that this is what happens when extremism flourishes. Our tour guide replied: “This place is not explained by extremism. It is explained by conformity.”’

‘Occasionally you do come across messages like this and think: dude what happened to you. How did you end up in a place where this is a message you send to strangers on the internet?’

I’m not the first and won’t be the last but this hit the nail right on the head. We talk a lot about how upsetting and bewildering it is to see people who should know better acting like this, unapologetically. I don’t get it and maybe, like my Bluesky mates, that’s a good thing. ‘… in the decade since 2015, the world’s “elite”, the top 1%, have increased their hordes of hoarded wealth by US$33.9 trillion. That’s trillion with a T, a number so gargantuan it is all but meaningless. Oxfam paints it in more coherent terms: enough money to “end global poverty 22 times over”.

“My take is that Goldstein was a laboratory. The tactics tested on us in 2022 and refined in the Voice [referendum] in 2023 were fully deployed in 2025, and they worked.”

‘… there appears to be no consequences for what happened, with proxy groups like Advance getting worse between 2022 and 2025.

“You just had these emboldened, entitled people who felt they could do and say anything to the rest of us and hurl abuse at us …”

‘While there was a clear rise in hostility at booths around the country, Goldstein seems to have reached another level, with almost an entire day of hearings put aside for Daniel campaigners …’
