We are seeking an ornithologist/modeller for a 2-year POST-DOC in Turin. Using archaeological remains, we will reconstruct past avian communities to understand the impacts of climate change and human pressure on birds through time. For details see cutt.ly/irN76QDZ PLEASE RT. #ornithology #AviArch

Latest government stats show a continued decline in many bird species across the UK 🪶🧪

These data are made possible by the dedication of expert volunteers, allowing us to track common bird populations for >50 years

🌿🔊 New research find natural soundscapes—especially those rich in bird song—boost mental well-being.

But how? 🧠✨

We found that these soundscapes work first through perceptions of bird diversity, and then building (awe) & restoring (stress reduction, restorativeness) capacity pathways.

Nice story of a 'European' Roller - equipped with a satellite tag over winter in South Africa, tracked up the east coast of Africa and across the Gulfs of Adan and Oman, to breed in north-west China - where it was eventually found by local ornithologists www.birdlife.org/news/2025/08...

The European Roller isn’t just a European migrant. One tagged bird reached China – far beyond expected routes. With each flight tracked, its true journey is unfolding.

From Kruger to Xinjiang: Tracking the European Roller’s Epic Journey
The European Roller has long been seen as a European migrant, but satellite tracking tells a more intricate tale. One tagged bird ended up in China, far from expected paths. With each flight logged, t...

This is a huge mistake. My experience on NERC panels is that resubmissions score higher and are more likely to be funded: the review process improves good proposals that should not be lost (along with the time spent on them).
jmbecologist.bsky.social
Really disappointing new policy from NERC banning resubmissions of grant applications

Many of us, including me, have won grants on resubmission,

using the reviews to improve the application

This is is neither fair nor productive

Great thread from @catmorrison.bsky.social on our recent Ecology Letters paper, which includes a lovely shinyapp to explore maps of synchrony in number, productivity and survival in European landbirds @btobirds.bsky.social #ornithology

Our new OA paper is out: dx.doi.org/10.1111/ele.... | Ecology Letters | #ornithology

Using @euring.bsky.social Constant Effort Site data spanning 12 countries across Europe we explore geographic and temporal variation in synchrony in counts, productivity and survival rates.

Using wavelet analysis, we show that synchrony in both demographic rates occurred more commonly over long timescales in European-resident species and short timescales in subSaharan-migrant species.

Using spatial correlograms we estimated the scale and strength of synchrony and show that synchrony is strongest and largest scale in productivity and weakest and smallest scale in count.
