The Telegraph was once a great newspaper. Tory, yes. But Tories once had respect for faith. The Bishop’s homily was not an ambush as anyone who bothered to listen to, or read, the whole thing with an open mind would surely attest. It was a plea for unity based on respect for human dignity and truth.

OTOH, when you have a wouldbe autarch who distrusts, indeed wants to upend, the institutions through which you would normally have had to go to influence policy, he’s the only person you need to get to in order to advance your agenda. And we know he’s gettable.
