Wealthy people make credible donors for large donations. There’s also the possibility the funds are on behalf of another state/party/person with whom the wealthy individual has a relationship.

I often tell the story that I had one job where my title inflated three times in a month as more people were hired. Nobody got more money and the job didn’t change but I went from executive to manager to director to Vice President to meet my new colleagues’ needs.

we make ‘occupations’ and ‘titles’ into such a big thing often beyond the actual significance and where it hides the person (deliberately?). People are reluctant to assume them or argue about qualifications. Often more useful just labels to help others understand what you do/who you are

Thinking of variants: Are you an artist if others treat your hobby as art? are you a consultant if you only appear at conferences? are you a teacher if people share what they learned from you? Are you a researcher if you have carefully marked up notes? a sportsperson if you own the equipment?
