Emeritus Chemistry Prof., University of Liverpool. Still dabbling in molecular electronics. The rest of the time, I'm usually riding a bike, cooking (and eating) or reading. Volunteer at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital.
The only thing to do when the weather is this horrible is bake; Scottish batch loaves from J Morton’s bread book.

Storm Amy blew over the tomato plants. So far we’ve made green tomato soup and four jars of tomato chutney. Any ideas for the remaining crop??!

Today, we’ve made green tomato soup and used 2 kg of green tomatoes to make chutney, and this is what’s left. Storm Amy blew over the plants.

Son has reached Bourge on his way to Paris. This suburb he found amusing for some reason.

This is the fifth successive apple crumble I have made with the cooking apples from our tree, after filling 8 3 litre Kilner jars with stewed apples too. And there are still loads of eating apples as well.

Son is on his way home from Lisbon. By bicycle. Here’s a little owl he saw at last night’s halt.

I didn’t buy this because of the name, honestly. It’s delicious. From the soon-to-be-lamented Wine Time (the proprietor is retiring).

The view from our hotel room. A bit different from my last visit to Douglas, Easter Sports Festival 1986 with Leeds Uni AC running 3 races in 3 days, drinking far too much and sharing 3 to a room in a scummy guest house!

The leaving of Liverpool (temporarily); off to the Isle of Man for a long weekend, and incidentally dodging the 30+ C temperatures. It’s forecast to be just 23-24 in Douglas.

Early start- my venue for the next few hours marshalling the venerable Anfield 100. Luckily it’s a decent day.

Mrs H has done some knitting for our daughter who is quite pleased with the result of the Premier League this season.

Parkin synthesis turned out well again. Something good did come out of Yorkshire!

Great evening out at the Edinburgh off Picton Road for the regular Monday Irish music evening. Sean (violinist here) celebrating his 70th birthday.

Typical cheeky chap robin- I’m digging over a raised bed, and he comes over, perches *on the spade*, looks at me, then pinches a worm and takes it away.

Today’s training session- hard but strangely enjoyable. Almost makes me believe I could TT again this season.

Prediction from the blossom levels here; reasonable cooking apple (left), decent eating apple (middle) and lousy plum (right) harvest this year!

Another pair of Scottish batch loaves from J Morton’s bread book. Made them with 50/50 milk and water this time as an experiment.

Lisbon is home to some outstanding museums. The Military Museum with its lovely baroque upper floor rooms and its enormous collection of cannon, in particular bronze examples, was almost empty when we visited.

In Lisbon- hotel rooftop bar with son and Mrs H. At least it’s stopped raining for now.

Simenon- not much has changed, except that the well brought up well educated young men have given way to idiots…
