I had the epiphany just a couple of weeks ago that Ringo is probably the best actual player of his instrument in that band. None of the others are *great* on the guitar (they're not Clapton/Hendrix/Gilmour great), or spectacular vocalists. What they were great at was *writing songs*.

Wife worked in A&E and related the tale of a group of teenage layabouts who'd hang out together and take turns "attempting suicide" on a Saturday night just for something to do. Saw them most weekends, "supporting" whichever of them's turn it was. They were always fine.
