Also, have you seen the work of Stride Predictor who recently started posting in The Other Place? Some shortcomings, but essentially barking up the right tree IMO.

I was going to research this area thoroughly this winter and possibly write something at length but life has got in the way. Maybe in the future.

These are a bit ancient history now, though most of the basic principles apply. Perhaps my biggest finding since is the influence of the sire, with, e.g., offspring of Dubawi staying further than predicted from their generally fast striding, and some other sires the opposite.

The elephant in the room is why no non-Europeans are considered, despite there being ample evidence to do so. WBRRs, for all their faults, are at least global.

He has contested some brutal paces (as well as some tepid ones) elsewhere and kept coming back for more. But I agree on the step back up in trip.

“Dogshit” a bit harsh - try being Welsh! - but NZL are about 5 points below average right now when RSA may be the best there has ever been.
