I seem to recall one of the Refns being pretty good.

This movie has a lot of weird implications for what it now imagines happened in the original WIZARD OF OZ. (So the monkeys ripped apart her ex boyfriend…??)

I can’t get mad at these movies, they remind me of overproduced late 60s Hollywood musicals and westerns that were trying to prove their respective genres‘ eternal appeal by cluelessly pandering to the youth of their day. Silly, but not without its try hard charms.

A good post intermission flashback can launch a long masala movie into the stratosphere. AKHANDA 2 makes time for a prolonged spellcasting duel between the Shiva powered hero and a freshly introduced evil sorcerer, involving human sacrifice, several extras impaled on a trident, a dislodged eyeball.

Who doesn’t??

I remember how loud the first one sounded in an empty Union Square auditorium. I regret missing AKHANDA 2 in theaters, though I seem to remember that the showtimes were pretty shit.

Exactly the mood-boosting tonic I was hoping for. Giddy, violent, & heedless. A good excuse to watch a zealous middle-aged nationalist--Nandamuri Balakrishna, whose notable recent titles include BHAGAVANTH KESARI & VEERA SIMHA REDDY (both 2023)--thrash various straw men, then lecture everyone else.
