The paperback of Hagstone is published today. Huge thanks to everyone who has supported the book in the last year, and to Ross for asking me to sign books at @foylesforbooks.bsky.social today. @cormackinsella.bsky.social

More Irish activists have now been taken by the IDF from international waters including author Naoise Dolan, TD Barry Heneghan and psychiatrist Veronica O’Keane.

They are part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition.

My sincere thanks to everyone who has supported the Global Sumud Flotilla. I'm home safe & will be followed by the other Irish people today. I'm just catching up and have much more to share but for now I am so so grateful for everyone's attempts to free us. Remember that Gaza is the story not us.

Our friend, poet and activist @sarahmaintains.bsky.social has been illegally detained by the IDF and is being held in an Israeli jail. There are reports of mistreatment and human rights violations. Please keep pressure on the Irish government and embassy to secure the release of Sarah and others. 🇵🇸🇮🇪

I read @appletwigli.bsky.social’s work years before we finally spoke a decade ago. Until yesterday it was via radio, email, DMs. Chats about writing, music, grief, work. Today we finally met in the Princeton sunshine. One the best gifts of writing is the friendship and community of other writers.

Thinking of @sarahmaintains.bsky.social and the other Irish citizens who are part of the @freedomflotilla.bsky.social, and have been detained by the IDF who illegally intercepted them in international waters.

Here is Sarah’s poem, ‘If I had any other thing’:

“This is what life is: the passage of time. It’s not about how to pass the time, but about the acceptance of the time passing.”

Very much looking forward to seeing a major retrospective of Hsieh’s work, which opens next week at Dia Beacon. (His work also features in my next book).

It was also the first of his one-year projects where instead of “Sam”, he used his real name, Tehching, despite his fear as a (then) illegal immigrant. All of his work is concerned with time, how it passes and what we do with it. Marina Abramović calls him the master of durational performance art.

He was allowed to use only a sleeping bag with no access to healthcare or transport, and could not enter shops for supplies or wash properly. 1981 was also a bitterly cold winter in New York. The only time Hsieh entered a building, was by force, when he was arrested for vagrancy.

On this day in 1981, Taiwanese-American performance artist Tehching Hsieh began his third one-year performance piece. Also known as ‘Outdoor Piece’, Hsieh lived on the street in New York for an entire year. He was not allowed to go inside at all, including buildings, vehicles, tents or the subway.

The piece also points out that censorship of writers was not unique to Ireland and that:

"If Samuel Beckett had been born in Czechoslovakia we’d still be waiting for Godot”.

Donal Fallon includes Norah Hoult here, citing writer John Broderick on how censorship had stolen a livelihood from Hoult: “She died with nothing except the old-age pension and was a most distinguished writer. She ended up in great poverty, and nobody bothered their heads about it.” archive.ph/rVmKZ

A small and overdue act, but it’s a great way to honour Hoult’s work.

A bargain! Nothing says “woman of the people” like a handbag that costs four/five figures…

Unless that’s a knock-off, she’s clutching a Hermès bag that costs about €20,000.
