Runs can go belly-up pretty fast, but I think that's just part of the game.
Level 6/7 by night one, 10/11 by night two, is generally pretty good. Boss weakness is important too, stops certain attacks.

If a field boss is something like a Blackblade Kindred or Draconic Tree Sentinel, they'll usually ignore it. If it's weak enough to vanquish before the circle closes on us, they'll do it.

Day 1: Nearby enemies from drop, then nearby Forts (think Fort Haight), then churches (Think Ranni's) and camps.
Day 2: Grabbing some Flasks and immediately heading into the Shifting Earth, or conquering the center castle from basement up.
