I feel grief for seeing wildlife in such a state because I want them to succeed out there. So then the thought process I go to next is "How do I help the others succeed then?" I saw another comment mention how to mitigate human-caused wildlife deaths, which I think is a great idea.

That said, I think it's also important to acknowledge those feelings and direct them towards the cause we're so passionate about rather than suppressing them. That's what always brings me back to the 'Why' I do this.

I've noticed that in the members of the public who bring this wildlife in, they're very excited about helping the wildlife around them - you can just tell this is a story they're telling everybody they know too. And I think it's hard for them not to get attached to the animal(s) they've brought in.

I think having an outlet is really important, like how you mentioned artwork. I like to write and tell stories a lot - and in a way, despite how some of the stories I tell don't always have a happy ending, these animals live on in the stories I tell, in a way.

They often have really good insights I didn't think about and help me back to the ground again. I also have to remind myself that while encountering negative experiences like this is obviously not ideal, the work we do is important and will help so many other individuals of a species and ecosystem.

Hi! Not exactly a scientist, but wildlife vet here in a high-capacity/high-intake wildlife facility and my job comes with unfortunately euthanasia/dealing with wildlife death often. When it starts getting overwhelming, I usually need time to decompress/talk it out to my non-vetmed/science friends.

Never thought I'd be doing a neurological exam on an invertebrate in my career, but here we are!
