I personally think the ending was a Titanic situation - because of the mention that the island was going to be demolished. Shinpei went back to their house, he may have died there. She was waiting to welcome him in the afterlife. 😭

There is such a deep sense of longing and romance about them only reuniting in their twilight years too. They still kept their love lit for each other over the decades, they remained loyal and committed to a memory… it hurts SO GOOD. I was ugly sobbing so early in the morning thinking about this.

(Spoiler Warning) ⛔️ I have already seen some fans displeased with the ending, but I’m fine with it. He followed her wish for him to live and he was atoning for his sins for the rest of his life.
