In my experience it had gotten better before the pandemic, but since then especially in the restaurants one is hearing it again, and increasingly more often "cash only please" - sometimes with sorry pretexts like "the cashier system is broken" or similar

Trump and Bondi don't regularly call nonviolent actions violent crimes for no reason. They don't call holding left-leaning political views domestic terrorism for no reason. They don't lie about protesters being paid agitators for no reason.
