In the Nintendo Treehouse presentation for Donkey Kong Bananza they confirm each world is a “layer” of earth that DK will travel deeper and deeper into as he progresses, even seeing a layer that’s completely frozen.
This, of course, is a reference to the classic Divine Comedy, Donkè’s Inferno.
