I have actually been sticking to my piano practice (I’m as shocked as you are) and today I’m re-learning this lovely song.

What’s nice about the songs in these books is they are written in the 40s so there is some delicious jazzy chord choices and voicings.

The harmonic series really tickles my nipples. The fact math and physics is the reason we find music pleasing is just so lovely.

It’s precisely why we love perfect fifths and major thirds (and all the rest), and why the dominant V chord is so important in music.

I completely forgot I had a micro KORG lying at the back of a closet. I immediately had to take it out and start playing with it.

When I bought this 16 years ago I had no idea how to use it, and now that I do it’s so much more fun!

Here is an example of saturation producing overtones. If I play a pure sine wave that is 110Hz (an A) and I add a saturator then push the drive really high it introduces odd harmonics of 330HZ, 550Hz, and so on.

This is so obvious in hindsight, but Analog in Ableton doesn't produce pure a sine wave i.e. just the fundamental frequency. It replicates analogue synth circuitry and adds harmonics.

Operator, however, does produce pure tones. A useful thing to know if your intention is to learn about this stuff.

I’m also having a much easier time reading intervals which is cool! I saw a video recently where someone explained reading sheet music is more about playing intervals than understanding the notes.

Like here is a sixth at the beginning of the second bar, with some thirds leading up to it :)

I’ve started teaching myself the piano again, and it’s nice coming back to it because re-learning something is SO much easier than trying it for the first time.

Today I’m brushing the cobwebs off everyone’s favourite: The Entertainer 💃🕺

I got a Novation Launchkey 49 and it’s so good 🤓 the chord map feature is especially exciting to me because it helps me apply music theory despite my shit piano playing skills.

The more I learn about the circle of fifths the wilder it gets. I just found out if you use a half circle on it you can see what notes are in a particular scale. Here’s an example showing C, F, and B♭Major.

What other secrets do you hold magic circle?

I had these in a box under the bed for years.

7 Gameboys, 5 LSDj carts, and 1 nanoloop v1.5 cart

Some of these gameboys have seen better days haha that green one got fried after a gig in Glasgow when a bottle of beer smashed on it

Second Skin really does a good job of making your new tattoo look like it’s trying to escape your actual skin

Electric cars are the tits. This year I’ve charged 819KW at home, and if we assume a low efficiency of 3 miles per KW then I’ve been able to travel 2,500 miles for £129.

That’s just insane.
