📍New Orleans
Look, I think Mitch did the right thing with this one, to be clear. But I read "politicians yelling about cultural issues that don't put food on the table," and immediately thought...

After Katrina, many of us said that we could choose to bear and mitigate the costs of climate change in collaborative, socially responsible ways that maintain communities OR we could shunt those costs onto the most vulnerable individuals. Guess what happened. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

The T-P/Advocate is perfecting the art of the flattering profile of Republican politicians that outright lies about their motivations in the process. Tyler Bridges is the master at this but Mark Ballard is learning to do it too. www.nola.com/news/politic...

T-P asks a panel to name the "best" and "worst" business tax incentive programs in the state. Jan Moller gives the only correct answer. www.nola.com/news/busines...

Honestly, though, reading through this all I can think about is how excited New Orleans City Council members (including your new mayor) have been for years now about putting cameras everywhere.

As always, the problem is much more about someone with an advanced degree and a management job handing tools to the thugs than it is about the thugs themselves. If you want to stop fascism, start with your boss.

I gotta say I don't think these signs are going to get through to voters who have no idea what Prop 1 or the Housing Trust Fund are. Most probably won't know if the sign wants them to vote for or against housing

Jail, probably

Ask any local politician about housing policy and they will emphasize moving people from renting to homeownership as their top goal. But really that is just moving people from "severely cost burdened" status to "house poor" www.nola.com/news/busines...

"We will give you money to avoid furloughs if you hand the payroll over to a guy who wants you to do furloughs" sounds like a shitty deal to me. But I guess I am not an elected mayor or councilperson whose only goal is to get these problems off of my desk. www.nola.com/news/new-orl...

Of course she welcomes it. It means she gets to do the budget austerity her closest backers want to do anyway. But now they get to blame some outside force for making them do it.

The constant threat of a fiscal administrator is just as bad as an actual fiscal administrator. Will mean the same austerity policies get implemented. But technically will be implemented by the elected mayor and council

I am shocked at how much I do not agree with any of this sentiment. To me, it's exactly the same sort of thinking as Hakeem Jeffries saying the Dems will win back Congress because of health care costs. Everyone wants to profit from suffering these days. And, no. Nothing good will come from suffering
