neither datacenters nor water bottlers are super heavy users. they're each about 0.04% of national freshwater use.

actually it's still not a lot. in 2021 the us consumed 15.7 billion gallons of bottled water * 12¢ ~= $2 billion dollars, about two weeks revenue for the industry.

for comparison, that rate would make a hamburger cost $72 more.

at $0.12 per gallon, *every datacenter in the US combined* would pay about $2 billion, or about three days of Microsoft's revenue. it's not really a lot of water.

every datacenter in the US combined would pay about $9 billion a year at that rate. that's about two weeks of revenue for Microsoft alone. nothing would change because datacenters don't use much water at all.
