Might be worth trying to bump midtones instead of shadows sometime when experimenting, or trying out the curves chart which gives a lot more control

True blacks would remain at the darkest value, if you wanted to retain the washed out shadows you could selectively boost the shadows :)

What might be more effective for your goal is seperating it out and only bumping up the midtones/gamma
This way, bright highlights would be more preserved with less clipping, and the rest of the frame-

I had suspected keeping the lights was the primary intention with direct bulbs
Not sure what editing software you use but I assume the process is along the lines of having the under exposed footage be-
