If you only ever have one opponent, all you need to do is to make them look worse than yourself. Doesn't matter what you actually stand for or accomplish, as long as you can rile up enough people against the other.

They're trying to take the place of the opposition as well. And since Americans aren't capable of conceiving of more than two political positions at the same time, that would mean they've effectively bullied the entire center & left part of the spectrum out of the picture.

Yeah, but that's a fundamental rule in Latin, not an informal exception. Japanese is similar in that pronouns are only ever used for emphasis, while in English they're normally mandatory.
Same for things like excessive context particles in English (on, to, by, through) where others use pre/suffixes.
