(for those who don't know, the WARN act is a federal law that requires companies with 500 or more employees to file a WARN notice at least 60 days in advance of mass layoffs, that is, 50 people or more.)

...which means that these companies are laying off permanent positions, not seasonal hires.

(Also, as an aside, this holiday season saw record lows in seasonal hiring, with some major players like Amazon, Target, and UPS doing barely any or even no seasonal hiring...yeah.)

That were seeing 118 WARN notices right off the bat on Jan 1st, 2026 is.....really troubling. January and February tend to have more notices than any other as holiday business slows, BUT! seasonal workers with set employment periods are not included in WARN notices.

2025 already saw mass layoffs at levels unseen since COVID lockdowns in 2020, and before that, the financial crisis in 2008-2009.
