"But I have to be online to sell stuff/pay my bills!"

Oh I KNOW.

Noticeably my sales tank across the board when I'm not online saying "Hey, buy my books! Join my Patreon!" because people can't boost what they don't see. But the hit is sometimes okay if it means I'm less of an anxious mess.

But I can do some household chores and spend time with my cats and focus on freelance work and writing and just not feel quite as much like garbage all the time, which in turn makes me a better person for others to be around, WHICH IN TURN maybe makes everything a little less terrible in small ways.
skyladawn.ca
At the moment I just want to go read instead use my allotted online time to fuck around.

Anyway, this is not me telling anyone what to do. But I'm not gonna fix anything terrible when I'm online 24/7 getting upset and angry and despairing and worrying.

Initially my thought was "I need to stay offline to remember what boredom is like and letting my brain get more contemplative and creative" but now I realize it's also "I need to re-learn how to focus on tasks without distractions" which sounds so simple and yet! It is not.

I get anxious and bounce around when I'm online, partly because there is so much interrupting me and partly because my response to boredom or needing to pause and think is to refresh pages and check things, and I truly feel like my brain is scrambled sometimes.

I noticed on Sunday, when I didn't even crack open the laptop, how focused I was on what I was watching--a couple of 90s films, that expected me to pay attention in a way that a lot of stuff doesn't now.

If we're watching stuff that doesn't expect us to focus, of course we won't pay attention.

Doing graphics work I often have TV on in the background, stuff I've seen a bunch of times so I know what's going on without following--I don't think it's bad to use TV as background. But I wonder how much is a chicken/egg thing, we pull out our phones with TV that is not designed to hold our focus.

For real, though, it was Monday when I tried to watch something in the evening that I realized my attention kept waning even though I was trying, and I got thinking about the second screen problem, how more and more on streaming is designed to be "watched" while people are on their phones.

I've been back online for two hours and honestly all I want to do is shut everything down again and read, god what is happening to me.

Offline and oblivious to everything terrible except for during set hours every day is ridiculously effective, I am very sad to report to everyone.

I kind of want to keep going but I think I need to let the next scenes work out in my brain a bit. Being offline to focus is helping a lot, though.

lol I'll try not to spend it all in one place.

Completely unrepentant about covering everything in fur and ripping holes in fabric by pulling clothes onto the floor.
Long-haired black cat on a laundry drying rack amid all the freshly cleaned clothes. He’s looking up at the camera because he gives no fucks that he’s not supposed to be on his mother’s Barbie Oodie sleep shirt. A long haired black cat on the bottom of the drying rack, peering from atop more laundry and beneath drying clothes like he’s in a blanket fort. Still unrepentant. A short haired tabby and white cat is photobombing below him.

Wrote 8K today on Waverly 8!

Also folded and put away all my laundry, got three bags of recycling out, got a bag of clothes ready for the donation bin, cleaned out a kitchen cupboard, prepped the next round of laundry. 19 hours offline.

Popping Freedom on now. Tomorrow I get to write a scene I am so excited about even though it’s quiet and no one dies. 🥰

Forgot to post earlier, but here is Shawn living his best life ignoring the fact that I told him to get off the drying rack—and my clean laundry—ten times.
A long-haired black cat with green eyes is lying on top of a laundry rack with freshly cleaned clothes that are drying, and will now be covered in fur. He shows no remorse.

They'll tell you "there was no crime when the convoy was there" but they neglect to mention that it's because the cops basically stopped enforcing things. It was lawless. The convoy people had the run of the place.

For weeks.

People were *living* in their trucks. They had a separate base of operations at the baseball stadium. They had supply chains. They were BUILDING THINGS ON PUBLIC LAND.

This wasn't people with flags and megaphones blocking a road for a few hours.

"Her house arrest sentence shows that in Canada blocking roads is only a crime if you have the wrong politics"

THE CONVOY TOOK OVER DOWNTOWN FOR THREE WEEKS.

THEY TOOK THE WHEELS OFF THEIR TRUCKS TO MAKE THEM HARDER TO MOVE.

PRO-PALESTINE PEOPLE GO HOME AT THE END OF THE DAY.

IT'S DIFFERENT.

Yes, you can decide what websites to block! So I blocked the usual suspects but I left a couple of writer-related ones I use (like a name generator), and anything I wanted to look up while writing I just made a list so I didn't get sucked into rabbit holes while googling lol.

I synched Freedom all my devices and turned off all social media/messaging except texts so someone can still text me if I need to know something or I can take calls (and I have a landline so my mother calls that). I left my banking app so I could pay bills but not Safari, email, social media, games.
