Wild to see "Trails of Cold Steel has now reached its conclusion" on my screen after being on this arc for years (been chipping away at it since 2022-2023).

I know Reverie is an epilogue to both it and Crossbell, but the next game on my list not being named CS is kinda wild

Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake (11/18/25)

(Once again, I haven’t touched any other version of DQII. So no discussion of version differences)
Quite the jump in quality. DQ I was good don't get me wrong, but DQ ll is clearly the better game on all accounts. While the story is no more in-depth than what DQ I had to offer, Il's main claim to fame is the fact that not only do you get a legitimate party this time, they're also all genuine characters with their own arcs and personalities. This is something even III didn't have to its name, as the party there were a bunch of characters you created. While I didn't enjoy injecting my own imaginary arcs into the characters I created there, l'd be lying if I said I didn't prefer having a party of set characters who actually interact with the world around them. Our group of 4 each get their time in the limelight, no one feels underbaked, and they bounce off well with each other. It's such a stark contrast to the other 2 Erdrick games, but I think this alone gives DQ Il the most engaging story of the trilogy. Gameplay is also mostly similar to the other two games, which the main difference being in party comp. Instead of just being a one main army or having a job system, each prince/princess takes one a set class that they specialize in for the whole game, based on what previous protagonists were capable of. The Prince of Midenhall is the Warrior with no spells to his name, the Prince of Cannock is the closest to the Hero class (he's the one who gets the Zap line of spells), The Princess of Moonbrooke is your dedicated Mage/Priest, and finally the Princess of Cannock is a Mage Knight with gadabout tendencies at the beginning. They're each built to make up for the other's weaknesses, and the main challenges for most fights is figuring out how to use each one to the best of their ability. There's no class switching whatsoever, so you better get your mileage out of everyone as they are. Scrolls are back, but not everyone can learn every spell so you gotta decide who gets what based on who can learn the ability. You may have 4 people this time as opposed to just 1, but that doesn't make DQ ll any less difficult. Enemies hit like a TANK, especially early on. They also appear in larger groups and get multiple actions at a much quicker pace compared to DQ I, so you can and will have a character get blitzed when you're unlucky enough. Honestly, I think it can be a little much. The encounter rate can feel egregiously high at points, and I found myself turning on Dracky mode more often just to speed up the grind. Dungeons also varied in quality. If i see one more dungeon with the "only one right exit, the rest loop the room" gimmick again I'm going to lose it. Especially after the Cave of Confusion, at that point I just whipped out a guide I was tired and over it. I found DQ Il to be a great time. Not one of my favorites, but it's an immensely satisfying conclusion to the Erdrick trilogy. Especially after viewing the true ending which I won't spoil because you need to see it firsthand for it to hit. Now, just gotta wait for February

Pokémon Legends Z-A (11/8/25)
I paid literally 0 attention to Legends ZA for the duration of its marketing cycle. I've never grown up with Pokemon and for me i feel like l've never been able to truly enjoy these games because of it. Brilliant Diamond was ok and Heart Gold was an improvement, but never did I truly feel like I could enjoy Pokemon as a series. Because I missed out on it during my childhood hood and couldn't really develop favorite Pokemon or regions or types. Main motivation behind my getting the Switch 2 bundle with ZA is because it was a JRPG and I'm not fond of MK as a series either. Coming out of it though, I think I can say I finally *get* it to an extent. Legends ZA's biggest boon is its setting and combat and how well they play into each other. I've always been biased to smaller scale settings; my favorite JRPG ever is set in s small city state. It's apparently been a point of contention amongst fans, but I think Lumiose City works great for this game. Could it do with more visual variety Absolutely! But as I wandered the streets and wild zones, as I returned to Hotel Z for dinner with Team MZ, I couldn't stop myself from getting attached to it all. The small setting also works well for the Z-A Royale, since all those tight spaces makes finding and evading opponents really engaging. I also like how the combat is in real time and weaknesses are identified on the move list. As someone unfamiliar with type matchups, it was a godsend. I also started getting attached to some Pokemon actually. This is the second time I’ve used Feraligatr, and while his Mega Evolution is uhhhhhh, he’s still served me super well as a tank in combat. I found a shiny Budew randomly while out and about and made it a Roserade, my first shiny ever. I kept a Fletchling on my team for the entire game and was surprised by how much I liked Talonflame. The Chespin you get from a quest ended up becoming a mainstay on the team, and I grew quite fond of her. For the first time, it felt like I actually made a team of Pokemon I genuinely loved rather than just the ones I heard were good. I don’t know how objectively strong Roserade or Talonflame are, but they’re mine and I really like them. Legends ZA was a nice surprise for me this year. My favorite Pokemon of the very few that I’ve played and I could genuinely see myself going back to it once day. They did good 🫡

Dragon Quest I HD-2D (11/5/25)

(Note: I haven’t played and beaten any other version of DQ1, so these are my thoughts on DQ1 HD-2D on its own terms, detached from is variants)
In my eyes there are two halfs to the DQ1 HD-2D experience, the first half where you focus on saving Princess Gwaelin and the second hald where you start focusing in on the Dragonlord. That first half of DQ1 is pretty good. The plots nothing special, but what's there feels like a natural progression of the events of DQ3, with all the charm intact. Playing as only 1 guy seemed more intimidating than it actually ended up being in the beginning. I found myself comfortably deleting regular mobs and bosses, while more challenging, didn't feel out right ludicrous. Saving Gwaelin felt like a balanced challenge. Tough at points but never demoralizing. Also, the fact that you can potentially carry Gwaelin through the entire second half of the game is pretty charming. It's just a shame that after rescuing Gwaelin the game starts to fall off a bit, mainly in its combat. I'm glad the decision was made to keep the hero solo for this. Rarely are protagonists completely alone for the majority of the adventure. DQ1's protagonist I think carves out a pretty strong identity because of this. But MAN did it feel like the latter half of the game was a but over-tuned in the enemies favor. One v. 3 battles can be a struggle enough, but when those 3 enemies start getting 2 actions per turn I think it's gone too far. Far too often in the second half did I feel like I was getting completely demolished due to factors out of my control thanks to this. Getting hit with a status like paralysis when you've only got 1 character to work with might as well be an instant game over. Or maybe I just got shit enough RNG for the first enemy to go twice, hit two times and have one of them crit me, killing me before I even had the opportunity to strike. Bosses in the second half are especially guilty of this, that Golem outside of Catlin WILL give you shit if you're unlucky. Or maybe the Goregoyle at the Shrine of Rain will double crit for fun. Or maybe you'll get put to sleep and watch helplessly as you get jumped. Meanwhile, unless you've used Wild Side, you're going once per turn. Once. Needless to say, the latter half of DQ1 suffers from difficulty that feels artificial. I don't feel like l'm losing because my strategies are weak, but because I failed an invisible check to go first or just got bad rng. I can't really control when/if multiple enemies get ahead of me in the turn or if they'll get the luck to demolish me in a single turn. If auto-saves didn't occur as frequently as they did this game would be a lot more annoying. At least the Dragonlord himself wasn't too bad. Fun but frustrating experience in the end. While i did enjoy myself, the action economy and how out of control it felt at times was a big blow. Hopefully DQ2 steps up.
