Still struggling with ocaml ecosystem, but I just got a small something working. The resulting code is mind-bendingly compact and still easy to follow. 😘 Maybe ocaml will grow on me. 😍

Installing ocaml requires several disjointed steps. Each takes a rather long time, compared to other languages. The word that comes to mind is "ecosystem" with various CLIs to do different things. Well documented but still ...

Oh I forgot to mention. I have been enjoying Helix editor and now I am trying out Flow. Fast like Helix and vi mode like vi / vim.

That time of year that I am going to spend / invest (cough) time in learning another programming language. This time, why not ocaml. But sheesh, installation is not as smooth as I had hoped.

A package I am exploring had to be build from source and it is in Crystal. So I played around with it. Compiled app performance seems good, but compile time is slower than Odin or Go.

LSP support seems limited.

To my surprise, the Odin libraries that I have been depending on do not seem to work on FreeBSD. At least not out of the box. They worked fine on MacOS, so this is unexpected. Bummer.

This despite odin-lang is available for `pkg install` in FreeBSD. Maybe I am doing this wrong?

Been trying Odin on a small experimental project for about a week's worth of effort. 👍🏼 I grok it.

Was bored yesterday, so I spent a bit of time downloading and experimenting with Odin. I tried out the fibonacci example. Surprisingly the executable does not run faster than the equivalent Go. Not surprisingly, the executable file size is much smaller than the equivalent Go.

Had looked at Odin before, but a recent article made me revisit it. It is very interesting, except that the domain space is not exactly suited to my current project. Will keep an eye out for it.

Self-hosting my email is not a distraction I want to take on for now.

Using a custom backup is scary, but in a very narrow scope, makes some sense. Not as battle tested as well established backup apps, but I've got time to battle test this. And so far so good.

Ah, I forgot PF firewall was already set up and running on the sandbox machine. And of course mail ports were blocked. That explains why I could not connect. Should I retry it? 🤔

Nah. I need to focus on my priority list.

Postponing email self-hosting again. All of the newer OSS all-in-one mail servers I found do not have good support / doc for FreeBSD yet. I have things to work on and email self-hosting is not on the priority list. 🛴

This time around, I was able to get the mail server up and running with TLS etc. Good! Everything seems to be correct, but I cannot connect through a mail client. ☹️ And all the needed ports are open. What did I miss?
