City of Alexandria refugee. Also social media refugee and not sure if this is the platform for me or not.
The Democrats have done a lousy job explaining the organization's value to the public. Outside the party's echo chamber, public perception of USAID specifically and international aid/development/soft power in general is sharply negative. A sampling of what I've seen over the last week...

One of the many things that bothers me about this is how Musk supporters think he is somehow qualified to uncover fraud, waste, and abuse, while ignoring the fact that he is unilaterally shutting down entire departments that bother him.

Any politician who pushed for that sort of scheme would get primaried. The perception of listening to public input is at the top of voter priority and candidates know this.

This loss is on Murray. He had a clear path to the basket and instead hid in the corner. Cutting off his route is as brain-dead a decision as Shedrick failing to come back to the ball against Furman in 2023.

Rohde haters aren't going to want to hear this, but this is his team, not McKneely's or Murray's.

The thing about there only being one labyrinth in Alexandria is bizarre. This in the upper left is a labyrinth, no?

Here is my letter to the editor that Alexandria Times declined to publish. My previous letter from 10 years ago is here: alextimes.com/opinion/your...?

I'm fine with this given that I mostly work from home. I think I do well on number of Metro stations used.

Arlingtonians gotta Arlingtonian.

No, they just brushed their hands off and declared victory.

If you are late tackling your sidewalk, which has now turned to ice, do not despair. Put the shovel away and use your humble half-moon edger to shatter the ice instead. A few taps in a vertical motion will break it into chunks.

Robo-taxis should be banned nationally until further notice.

Most of the albums you post are too obscure for me but I at least know that one.
You're the only person I know IRL or virtually that would have the slightest interest in this book I just got.

Your occasional reminder that Amtrak is not currently viable for day trips with any kind of schedule. Hopefully we will reach the point where we can take VRE and won't be stuck rolling the dice with NEC trains.
On the plus side, paying the 10% premium for a fully refundable ticket paid off.

I'll be interested to see this because from my perspective, Alexandria is more gentrified than ever and there is no evidence that the curve has bent.

Because we must defend this and protect the neighborhood from anything denser.

But Fairfax County DOT will continue patting itself and VDOT on the back.

It's not just developers buying teardowns with cash. You can tell the developers from the intended owners. The developers rebuild quickly. This lot has been under construction for at least a year.

The return trip is more straightforward. It is a straight shot on Cameron St. with a bike lane. However, the bike lanes are in the door zone and not separated. East of Washington St., we have a similar situation with two lanes one way, not following today's best practices. Does the city care? End 🧵.

And we arrive at City Hall. I hope the new design for Market Square improves on the existing bike storage and encourages approach by bike and similar modes.

Turning right onto Royal St. we switch to sharrows with no center line. While sharrows aren't bike infrastructure, this is effectively an advisory bike lane and not too bad.
December 1, 2024 at 9:02 PM
East of Washington St., Queen St. becomes two-way. I'm not over here often during busier times but my perception is that this stretch is not usually busy so the center line / no bike lane design is tolerable. It still isn't comfortable.

Bonus content: The Kate Weller Library is on our route. One crappy bike stand is visible on Google Maps (1) but a 4-bike rack is by the front door. Maybe if the library were more easily accessible by bike, it would get more use and therefore have better bike parking.
