Design systems enjoyer. Currently working @spotify on design systems and infra platforms, previously @canva owning developer portal! 🌏 Sydney
It's just an entirely unnecessary change. I choose iPhone every year because of it's simplicity in that I just need it to allow me to connect to people, and do some light productivity (emails, Slack, instagram). The phone is no longer a "gadget" that needs gimmicks to sell surely?

If you're a raycast user, you can remap the cmd-control-space keybind to use the raycast emoji picker which I find has much better search/usability!

It was very similar at Canva. In my experience these massive monorepos MUST have an infra team of whose entire responsibility is ensuring that the hairy parts of monorepo/ci/cd management are abstracted away from feature devs. It's something you can't really wing/half-ass

I don't get it? I was born in Australia and have been here my whole life :)

I was bored of the product area I was working in at the time and there wasn't anywhere that enticed me for an internal transfer, and at the time they didn't have "embedding" or secondments. I'm an avid music listener so the open role for Spotify was justbeing in the right place at the right time :)

Australian pay scales are generally lower across the board compared to the US, but Canva was great in my time there and checks all those boxes

Are there any reports of demand for Swift/Kotlin? I assume that there is some non-zero amount of startups looking to deliver _some_ mobile experience. Are they generally sticking to the React Native/Flutter/Ionic/etc?

for every tech company using the cool new popular social media tool, there are a thousand companies using a version of java spring that was EOL 8 years ago

i have no idea why protocol buffers (and by extension, rpcs) aren't the industry standard for apis yet, when you use them it feels so clear, to me at least, that they should be

I think that some day it'll get there, once the context sizes increase to such a number that the scenario you're mentioning is feasible. I'm looking forward to a time where it's possible so step through like you do a merge conflict in git, but it's just not feasible today unfortunately :(

upgrading react native anywhere between v0.4 and v0.6 was genuinely as most projects had to be ejected to add third party deps. even though it's not my go to mobile choice x-platform choice any longer i can appreciate how easy it's improved mobile dev for the masses!

that's a totally fair, it does seem so far like it's quite a bit easier to ignore such discourse here, and focus on the communities/discussions you more closely align with! even though i'm not always a fan, i think it's healthy that the option is there for those who are interested

i'm worried about the engagement farmers coming over here and creating unnecessary drama. i just wanna enjoy tech discourse, not drama 😅

I've had a manager echo the exact same sentiment when they were there 😬

it's tricky, css has been around for so long now it'd be really hard to get rid of that muscle memory.

that comment on the blogpost resonates with me, in that mixins are present in sass, and yet i'd never reach for them for some reason even though i know it'd be easier 🤔
