“My interest in beauty was always bound to be there, being half Korean,” he told me over Zoom from Los Angeles. “My one auntie is the plug. She gets skin-care products for me every birthday and every Christmas.” Williams says that Storrie, on the other hand, doesn’t even like to wear sunscreen, which horrified the Canadian actor. “I was like, You look like a crazy person, and your skin will hate you,” he says. Thankfully, it seems Williams’s habits are rubbing off on his co-star. “I’m staying at Connor’s right now and I just found sunscreen in his bathroom,” he says. “He’s been liking my skin care, and I think he got a little competitive, so he stepped it up.”

Lesley Goldberg: What does it say that a very queer and racy show like this has been able to break through at a time when there's so much anti-LGBTQ sentiment in the world? Jacob Tierney: Putting queer sex on the screen in a celebratory and sexy way is not common at all. It's interesting how much people were clearly craving that kind of thing. They wanted intimacy. They wanted to see sexually alive, queer people in a way that we kind of self-censor and don't always do. I don't think the show is popular despite the horniness; I think it's popular because of the horniness. What does the show's success say to executives who may be gun-shy to greenlight queer stories given the current climate? Jacob Tierney: The lesson is less about the queer thing than it is about if you're buying IP and ignoring the audience that made it valuable. If you are like, "I'm picking up all these books and I'm going to change them." Why? Do something else. If these books have become valuable because the fan base is rabid and enthusiastic and you think you're smarter than the fan base because you've made three procedurals, I don't know what to tell you. You have to respect the audience.

How would Heated Rivalry have been different if it were made in the U.S.? We would have waited the entire season to see a kiss. That's what would have happened. We definitely would not have had sex in the first episode. It would have been about a whole team with 20 other players and their wives and anything to dilute the essence of what this was. We had one executive tell us, "What this show really needs is a female main character."
