I guess it does kind of fit that his story in Shadow GameCube was about trying to figure out just what the hell you are in this new environment I guess, post the worst thing that ever happened to you. But it speaks to the series lack of intent at the time which doesn't play well.

You take him outside that environment, especially when the Sonic franchise was starting to come back, and it feels a bit weird. You gotta contextualize Shadow right, I think the Generations expansion did it pretty good recently. He works well in that kind of "reflective" story.

I think part of the reason Shadow worked so well in SA2 is his character was a good reflection on the state of the Sonic franchise. Maria was the Dreamcast. Extremely loveable but on life support. He, the Shadow of Sonic, was meant to save her but she died even younger than anyone predicted.
