A good first read in my opinion is tales from moominvalley, it's not the first book but it's a collection of short stories set in the world of moominvalley and I feel is a good introduction!!

i actually haven't watched the new show myself, I was referring to the book series! I've heard it's a very good though :) I do absolutely recommend reading the books though!!
