Too much to type, but Larry Doby went through same things in the AL at the same time. He was younger and chosen more for filling a need on the team (though his temperment was considered suitable).

He was more thrown into the fire than prepared like Jackie Robinson. Very underrated sports figure.

This is one of those things where it is bullshit it had to be done that way, but you can understand why they did.
January 14, 2026 at 1:21 PM
Branch Rickey believed that Robinson had the temperment to endure the coming abuse without retaliating.

Robinson was young-ish, college-educated, and a former officer in the military.

Jackie Robinson was an amazing baseball player, but that was not the only reason he was chosen to break the color barrier.

I think people see how it works for the right to do this. They have created an ecosystem where you just have to utter woke, PC, communist, or socialist without further explanation.

We should do better.

Yes, I work in the field on the lending side. Commercial rates are typically fixed for 5 years when the paper is held by banks and the loans are almost always ballons.
January 12, 2026 at 2:15 PM
Think about it from the perspective of purchasing a home. Can you afford more home at 3% rates or 6% rates? Being able to afford more home means more people bidding on homes means higher home
prices.

Economy at large works in a similar but more indirect way.

Yes, cheap money drives inflation.

He is so fucking dumb that it hurts.

China or Russia taking Greenland would not happen because it would trigger an automatic response from NATO.
January 12, 2026 at 3:26 AM
Yeah, I have to agree with Joe here. If we need to be saving our f bombs for something worse then I don't want to imagine what that is.
January 11, 2026 at 1:31 AM
I was thinking about this earlier. I am not a Presidential historian, but when was the last time a President won the election on policy and not personality?

Trump winning and Lake shows the discrepancy I am pointing at.
January 10, 2026 at 6:10 AM
This is kind of my point.

She was the most MAGA candidate possible, but she isn't Donald Trump.
January 10, 2026 at 6:07 AM
Kari Lake ran 4.4% behind Donald Trump. Republicans should have won at least three more Senate seats.

Did they forget to rig these elections, or are people just more nuanced and complicated than we give them credit for?

There is a proper way to challenge even experts, and it is by asking thoughtful, sincere, and intellectually honest questions that make the person *think* about their own position. Doing so makes it a learning opportunity for both.

That may not get a response, but we are not entitled to responses.
January 10, 2026 at 4:48 AM
We had a Presidential election on November 8, 1864.
January 10, 2026 at 3:39 AM
This is accurate in multiple ways. I have an uncle that was a mailman and drove around and listened to talk radio all day.

Guess how he votes.
January 9, 2026 at 2:49 AM
And that is tragic because of all people, conservative Christians should see the value in all human life based on their professed values.
January 8, 2026 at 6:23 PM
It would obviously be the right thing to do to commit the resources needed, but I think this is often where liberal politics and Tom's analysis diverge.

I read him through a lens that is focused on winning elections, and that is an area where liberals (I am a liberal Democrat) fail miserably.
January 8, 2026 at 6:00 PM
That isn't to defend Reagan (or crucify him), but it is a fair point to raise. I happen to *think* that neither side would have been very good at handling it then.

Imagine trying to get the public at that time behind a cause that was largely seen as the problem of people they viewed as others.
January 8, 2026 at 5:57 PM
Maybe he is, but we make Reagan out to be a cartoon villain and he would definitely be a breath of fresh air in today's GOP.

I have stated I was not around then, but his handling of the AIDS crisis is oft villified. Tom has pointed out that Mondale was not making an issue of it either.
January 8, 2026 at 5:55 PM
Yes. A person was more likely to have to gather facts and form an opinion than be given an opinion and find facts to support it.

My understanding is that the wackadoodle travelers always existed, but they needed more than a smart phone to infect a person's algorithm.
January 8, 2026 at 4:56 AM
I think it is difficult for people my age (40) and younger to understand that there was a time where party members (especially GOP members) were not expected to merely oppose the other side at all costs.

That was before Reagan ended the Fairness Doctrine (kidding).

I like that @radiofreetom.bsky.social is a pedant because it forces me to frame my argument as best as I can before I make it.
January 8, 2026 at 4:05 AM
I have always argued we need to know who is here and we need to know who is coming and going.

My idea of who should be allowed would be considered liberal, but I would never argue against having control over it.
January 8, 2026 at 4:03 AM
I was born in 1985, so I don't have any first-hand memory of the time period. As best as I can tell, a lot of people have replaced Reagan's actual record with whatever they want.

Republicans never held a House majority and only held the Senate half of his time in office.
January 8, 2026 at 3:59 AM
Big shock this guy is a fucking chud.
